Between 3D polishes and manicure printers, it’s no secret that high-tech nail art is having a bit of a moment right now. But this latest product developed for La Roche-Posay, is arguably the most innovative of the bunch.
L’Oreal (the beauty giant behind the skincare brand) has launched a nail sticker that helps monitor UV exposure via a sensor, potentially preventing the risk of skin cancer. And considering how easy it can be to ignore the damage we’re doing each time we head outdoors (and the fact that it’s super cute looking), wearing one of these is kind of a no-brainer.
The device – which looks like a tiny blue and beige donut – collects data from your surrounding environment and stores it in a chip that’s synced to your smartphone. Via an app, you’ll then be alerted you anytime you’ve reached the max amount of time your specific skin type should be exposed to the sun.
According to a press release, an earlier model of the ‘UV Sense’ encouraged consumers to change their sun safety behaviours, with 34 percent of users applying sunscreen more often and 37 percent finding shade more frequently.
“The technology within UV sense is ground-breaking and has so much potential to impact the future of technology and wearables,” explains Guive Balooch, Global Vice President of L’Oreal’s Research and Innovation Technology Incubator.
“Armed with research and consumer insights from the Original My UV Patch, we set out to create something that blends problem-solving technology with human-centred design, offering real-time data and longer wear in a discreet product that fits any lifestyle.”
And no stress if you’re not a nail art type of operator, the battery-free tech can be fitted to your sunnies, watch or any other accessory.

The product will be available to purchase from stores and selected dermatologists in 2019, with the price point expected to be between $40 and $50.
